Pigment Prints - Photo Encaustics - Installations

About

As an artist, I’ve always been inspired by nature. My previous work was in metal and stone— exhibited and held worldwide in major museum and private collections. I have earned numerous awards, including a New York Foundation for the Arts grant (NYFA) and two National Endowment for the Arts grants (NEA).

Working with paper and wax is a departure for me, although in some ways it represents a full circle-though that is another story…

I am drawn to the living world — its light, its fragility, its capacity to astonish. Engaging with refracted light and shadow, I balance intuition and intellect, composition and chance, until the invisible becomes visible.

My photo-based floral series is a meditation on the beauty and vulnerability of flowers. I immerse myself in color, texture and form, aware that more than one in four flowering plant species face extinction. My newest series, Deep Blue, turns that same attention to the ocean, where jellyfish drift through an ancient, imperiled world. Luminous, alien, and hauntingly beautiful, they are among the oldest living creatures on Earth — and in an era of warming seas and ecological upheaval, among the most telling. My images are soft focus, blurred- expressing the ephemerality of life and the instability of the world we are living in. In world rushing by at hyper-speed, my art asks that we pause…to contemplate the wondrous, fragile garden — above ground and below — a garden we all share.

My large scrolls, diptychs and triptychs are printed on thin Japanese Kozo paper infused with encaustic wax, rendering it translucent and luminous — ideally suited to subjects defined by light passing through them. Other works are printed on archival fine art papers, exploiting the depth and richness heavyweight paper can achieve.
